Hello Sopilka,

Please ensure that this coming Monday November 22nd, all students in my classes come focused and ready to learn. We will be pushing through a lot of choreography in Green, Blue and Black levels. This weekend would be an excellent opportunity to practice what we have already done in our dances. That way we don't need to spend too much time reviewing choreography.

Christmas Concert - Only 3 weeks away!

Please let all family and friends know that the Sopilka Christmas Concert will be held at A.L. Horton on December 13/10 at 7:00 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to see the progress that our children have made so far. And as always, a visitor will be stopping by for a visit.  Dance practice for December 13, 2010 will be as follows:

Cultural Centre: Yellow  4:45-5:15 pm
                            Red  5:15-5:45 pm                                                               

AL Horton:  Green  4:15-4:45 pm

                     Blue  4:45-5:15 pm
                     Black  5:15-5:45 pm
                     Ensemble  5:45-6:15 pm

Set up of chairs and snacks: 6:15 – 6:45 pm.

Concert to start at 7:00 pm sharp.

Extra Scheduled Rehearsal for Miss Corinna’s Classes & Ensemble

Just a reminder that there will be a make-up rehearsal for all my classes on Friday, November 19th. Come to the Cultural Centre for your regular scheduled class. I am really hoping that everyone can make it but if you are unable to attend, please be sure to let me know.

Yellow: 4:45-5:30pm
Red: 5:30-7:00pm
Ensemble: 7:00-10:00pm

REMINDER - Solo/duet/trio sign up deadline is this Monday, November 15th!

Please, Please, Please – ‘Ladies in Red’ and Ensemble Dancers review your choreography BEFORE next Monday’s class. The Christmas concert is closer than you think!

Solos, Duets, Trios

This notice is for the Blue, Red, Black, and Ensemble Families.  Any younger groups wishing to participate must have the instructor's permission first.

I need a listing of who is interested in doing a solo, duet, or a trio. (Trio is the largest please).  I require this information no later than November 15.  And if you already have your costume, arranged for rental, etc, please let me know the region you would like to perform.

Solos, duets, and trios are paid for by the parent/student, and included in the cost of the solo, etc will be the venue rental and mileage for the instructor. The cost for just the instruction is as follows:
Solos - $150
Duets - $200
Trios - $250
This is based on 3 hours of instruction.  If more time is required, the costs will increase. 
Mileage is usally split amongst the group and has ranged from $30.00 to $80.00 - depends on the amount of dancers.  Venue rental depends on the practice area - as the Cultural Centre, Aquatic Studio, and AL Horton all have different pricing.  As soon as I have this information, I will pass it to you.

Once you have committed to do the extra dance(s), you will automatically be enrolled in all the festivals/competitions we will be attending.  If you choose NOT to participate in a paticular festival, it is up to you to inform the program directors - Taneen Rudyk or Nancy Makowecki - of this so your name can be removed.  Failing to do so will result in the festival charge for that dance being paid back to Sopilka by you.  Taneen and Nancy will also enroll you in a festival we are not attending as a group (ie: Cheremosh), if you wish to participate in it, but once again, you must notify them as soon as possible.  Please keep in mind that most competitions/festivals have to be enrolled in at least 4 months in advance.  The sooner you can get this information to them, the better.

Once I have the list, it will be given to Corinna, and Bryan and her will make the decisions as to which instructor will take the dances.

A Ukrainian Dancers Dream

Virsky is the best of the best of Ukrainian dance groups. Based in Kiev, Ukraine this professional dance group trains eight hours per day in order to entertain with perfection. I was lucky enough to attend a workshop, which the Virsky Dance Company held in Edmonton on Wednesday, October 13^th. This workshop inspired me to continue dancing and to pursue any other dance forms offered. This class clearly showed me the things, which I need work on and how I can better my dancing technique. Daria and Andri, members of the Virsky Dance Company, taught this workshop. They spoke Ukrainian for the entire three hours, which made us all pay more attention. Luckily, there was a translator who helped to clarify what the instructors expected. We were taught steps and combinations for some Virsky dances. Later, while watching the Virsky performance in the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton, I could pick out the sequences that we learned. This was an experience I will never forget.

It's Time!

Time to get started on choreography!

Bryan and I are meeting this Saturday to get a head start on the Ensemble's first dance. We are excited to start this dance on the 30th! Region to be revealed at the workshop....

To my 'Ladies in Red' we will begin our new dance on Monday and then really 'hook in' at the workshop! Region to be revealed on Monday!

Now we are all aware that there is school sports, hockey, and other commitments going on.  However, these workshops are very important and mandatory attendance is very appreciated.  This is where the whole dance is taught, and missing a workshop puts the dancer extremely behind in learning the choreography.

Our Instructors

INSTRUCTORS: Please join us in welcoming our new instructor, Bryan Pitchko to the family, and Corinna Dooley who is returning as our Artistic Director.

Bryan began dancing at age 4 at his local parish in Winnipeg Sts. Peter and Paul.  He continued dance after his family moved to Calgary in 1992. After dancing with Yalenka and Tryzub schools Bryan joined the Tryzub Ensemble when he was 14. During his 4 years with Tryzub, Bryan toured Canada, the United States and Australia. In 2005 Bryan had the great opportunity to share the stage with both his older sisters and his mother and father, all of whom are dancers as well. After moving to Edmonton in 2004 to attend the University of Alberta, Bryan joined the ranks of Volya! and over the last six years has toured Italy, San Francisco, New York, Slovenia, Serbia, and most recently Turkey. In 2007 Bryan began teaching with the Kupalo Ukrainian Dancers and has taken the youth ensemble on tours through California, New York and Ireland. Outside of dancing Bryan is currently finishing his last year of a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Grant MacEwan University and is talented bass guitarist.

Corinna (Crockett) Dooley has been involved in the dance community for 25 years; with extensive training in ballet and Ukrainian dance as well as workshop opportunities in jazz, modern, contemporary and musical theatre. Corinna danced for 7 years with the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers, participated in the national tour of Cinderella, as well as performed in notable performances for Queen Elizabeth II, former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and many other dignitaries. Corinna was also fortunate to be involved in a USA tour of “A Royal Christmas” with opera sensation – Andrea Bocelli. Corinna has been teaching Ukrainian dance in rural and urban settings for more than 10 years. She has participated in numerous workshops both locally and in Ukraine in order to diversify her repertoire and broaden her dance horizons. She is also a qualified Shumka Dance Syllabus Academy Instructor. Corinna has taught with Sopilka for 3 years and is excited for the 2010/2011 dance season!
